Tomes and Company. They have now put in a further statement that the total amount of the loan was $200,000, and that a balance of

$185,000 is still due. These two statements as to the amount for which the property was mortgaged do not agree.

But without going into the complications of

the case, the proper course is for the Bank to put in a cisime for their money against Feng Hua Chun, who cannot be allowed to aort- -gage Chou Tung Sheng's property clandestinely, and thus prevent

repayment of the public money which the latter has embezzled.

I have the honour to request that you will

communicate with the Governor of hongkong and desire him to in-

-form the Bank to the above effect.
